Ahn Sung-ki, one of South Korea’s most celebrated actors, passed away at the age of 74 after battling blood cancer. Born in Daegu in 1952 to a filmmaker, Ahn began his cinematic journey as a child actor in the 1957 film The Twilight Train.

Over the next several years, he appeared in roughly 70 films before stepping away from the industry to pursue a more ordinary life. Despite leaving acting temporarily, Ahn’s early exposure to cinema laid a foundation for his eventual return, shaping him into one of the country’s most respected performers.

After his early film career, Ahn attended Seoul’s Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, majoring in Vietnamese. Although he graduated with top honors, he struggled to secure employment at major companies, as the aftermath of the Vietnam War limited the practical use of his degree. Believing he could still succeed in acting, Ahn returned to the film industry in 1977.

His breakthrough came in 1980 with the lead role in Lee Jang-ho’s Good, Windy Days, a coming-of-age story reflecting the challenges of rural working-class men during South Korea’s rapid modernization. The performance earned him the Best New Actor award at the Grand Bell Awards, solidifying his status as a rising star.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ahn starred in a series of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. His notable roles ranged from a Buddhist monk in Mandara (1981) to a devoted celebrity manager in Radio Star (2006).

Other memorable performances included portraying a beggar in Whale Hunting (1984), a Vietnam War veteran in White Badge (1992), a corrupt cop in Two Cops (1993), a murderer in No Where To Hide (1999), and a special forces trainer in Silmido (2003). Over his six-decade career, Ahn collected numerous accolades, including five Grand Bell Awards for Best Actor, an unprecedented achievement in South Korean cinema.
