Nam Tae Hyun’s anticipated return to the stage has been canceled after a growing wave of public criticism surrounding his recent drug controversy.

The former WINNER member was set to perform a new song at the ‘K-pop Week in Hongdae’ festival on May 6, marking what would have been his first major appearance following legal issues related to methamphetamine use.

Organized under the theme “Closer and more sincere,” the Hongdae festival, which runs from April 11 to May 11, aims to spotlight more intimate live performances in small venues, moving away from the usual grandiose concert settings.

Nam Tae Hyun’s inclusion was seen by organizers as a potential step toward redemption, with Yoon Hyung Bin, one of the event planners, previously stating,

“Nam Tae Hyun was determined to make a sincere return, and we hoped the audience would see his genuine side on stage.”

However, the response from the public told a different story. As news of his appearance spread, public backlash intensified, with many voicing concerns about the implications of giving stage time to a performer recently involved in a drug-related scandal.

Despite the festival’s intentions of promoting sincerity and connection, critics argued that his participation clashed with the event’s values.

Ultimately, due to the controversy and negative reception, his stage was quietly removed from the schedule, and the planned comeback performance was canceled entirely.

Nam Tae Hyun, who had once been a rising star in the K-pop world, has faced a string of challenges since leaving WINNER in 2016.

Though he continued to pursue music through his band South Club and solo activities, his public image has suffered due to a series of controversies—culminating in his 2023 drug charges, which deeply damaged his reputation.

This cancellation underscores the strict scrutiny celebrities face in South Korea, particularly regarding drug-related offenses.

While many fans and some insiders hoped for a redemptive arc through live music, it’s clear that the road to public forgiveness will be long and complex.
