Korean-American rapper Dok2 (real name Lee Joon Kyung, 35), once celebrated for his flashy lifestyle and pioneering role in Korean hip-hop, has officially paid off 672 million KRW (~488,000 USD) in outstanding taxes—bringing an end to a years-long saga of financial scrutiny.
A Debt Years in the Making
On June 2nd, Korean media confirmed that Dok2 had fully settled his unpaid taxes, which included both comprehensive income tax and health insurance premiums.
His name was first thrust into controversy in 2022, when he was listed by the National Tax Service as a habitual high-value tax delinquent, owing nearly 300 million KRW in back taxes.
The following year, further attention was drawn to his financial standing when it was revealed that he was also delinquent on 22 million KRW in health insurance premiums.
The revelation shocked many fans and industry insiders, particularly because Dok2 had long cultivated an image of success and luxury.
He was widely known for flaunting expensive jewelry, high-end cars, and stacks of cash on social media and TV programs—particularly during his time as a producer on Mnet’s ‘Show Me the Money’, where he helped shape the public face of Korean hip-hop.
From Underground Legend to Mainstream Icon
Dok2 debuted in 2005 at the age of just 15 and quickly rose through the ranks of Korea’s underground rap scene.
His major turning point came in 2011, when he co-founded ILLIONAIRE RECORDS with fellow rapper The Quiett.
The label became a cultural force, especially after Beenzino joined the roster, giving rise to the “Illionaire Gang”—a loyal fanbase that admired the trio’s raw authenticity and unapologetic pursuit of wealth and status.
ILLIONAIRE played a crucial role in popularizing Korean hip-hop, breaking down barriers between underground and mainstream, and inspiring a new generation of rappers and producers.
Despite its success, the label officially disbanded in 2020, marking the end of an era in Korean music.
Public Image vs. Private Reality
Dok2’s financial issues raised broader questions about the discrepancy between celebrity image and real-life responsibility.
While his luxury branding helped cement his stardom, it also intensified public criticism when his tax delinquency became public knowledge.
His full repayment of the 672 million KRW now seems to signal a desire to move past the controversy and possibly reset his career.
As of now, he has not made a public statement about the repayment, but many fans are hopeful it may mark the beginning of a comeback.
