BTS Songs Censored Following Composer Bobby Jung’s Conviction, Fans Disappointed

Last updated:

BTS fans may never hear some of their favorite tracks performed live again, following the legal troubles of composer Bobby Jung, also known as Jung Dae Wook of the indie band Autumn Vacation. In May 2020, Jung was accused of illegally filming and sexually assaulting a 20-year-old aspiring singer, referred to as victim ‘B.’ The case gained widespread attention, especially after the victim tragically took her own life. Jung initially pleaded “not guilty,” and the case was dismissed.

However, in February 2021, another alleged victim came forward. The prosecution merged both cases, and Jung was indicted last year under the Sexual Violence Crime Penalty Act. In 2022, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced him to one year in prison for illegally filming a nude woman without her consent, 40 hours of sexual violence education, and a five-year ban from working at institutions serving children, youth, or disabled individuals. The court noted that while Jung did not distribute the footage and had no prior offenses, he had shown no genuine reflection on his actions.

The controversy resurfaced for BTS fans when the PERMISSION TO DANCE ON STAGE in THE US DVD was released. Several tracks associated with Jung, including “Love Myself,” “Love Maze,” “I’m Fine,” “HOME,” “Filter,” “Dream Glow,” and “134340,” were reportedly removed or censored. Notably, “Love Maze” and “HOME” were omitted from the DVD despite having been performed, sparking disappointment among ARMYs. While fans recognized the need for accountability, many lamented that other artists involved with the songs were indirectly affected by Jung’s misconduct.

As BTS prepares for their largest tour to date, ARMY may face the unfortunate reality that beloved songs like “Love Maze,” “HOME,” and Jimin’s solo “Filter” are unlikely to be performed, leaving a gap in the live experience for longtime fans. The situation highlights the lasting impact of one collaborator’s actions on the wider music community.
