Director Yeon Sang-ho has struck box office gold once again, establishing a historic milestone for South Korean cinema this year.
His highly anticipated new feature, “Colony,” has officially crowned itself the fastest film released in 2026 to surpass the coveted milestone of 1 million moviegoers.
The post-apocalyptic thriller has taken the domestic box office by storm, generating widespread cinematic fervor and demonstrating an explosive commercial trajectory since its theatrical release.
According to official statistics finalized by the Korean Film Council’s (KOFIC) integrated computer network on the morning of May 24, 2026, “Colony” successfully mobilized a massive cumulative total of 1,089,996 audience members.
Remarkably, the cinematic powerhouse accomplished this feat just four days into its theatrical run, having initially debuted on May 21.
This breakneck pace sets a new high-water mark for the year, outpacing the commercial ticket sales rate of every single major blockbuster released in 2026 so far.
Most notably, it surpassed the opening velocity of the year’s current highest-grossing mega-hit, “The King’s Warden” (also tracked under the title “The Man Who Lives with the King”), which ultimately drew a staggering 16.85 million viewers over its entire run but required a full five days to achieve its initial 1-million-ticket milestone.
To commemorate this stunning achievement, director Yeon Sang-ho alongside primary cast members- including Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, and Kim Shin-rok- shared a joyous group photograph while holding bright yellow celebratory balloons shaped into the number 100, symbolizing the 1 million admissions mark.
A Terrifying New Evolution of the “Yeon-Verse”
The narrative core of “Colony” is set against the backdrop of a sudden, claustrophobic bioterror disaster triggered by an unidentified mutated virus.
The plot tracks a group of desperate survivors who find themselves completely trapped inside a massive, sealed skyscraper commercial center.
As they struggle to find a way out, they are forced to engage in a brutal, high-stakes battle for survival against infected individuals who are evolving in completely unpredictable and terrifying ways.
The project marks an expansion of director Yeon Sang-ho’s highly celebrated, signature zombie cinematic universe- affectionately dubbed the “Yeon-verse” by global cinephiles- following in the massive footsteps of his genre-defining blockbusters “Train to Busan” and “Peninsula.”
However, industry insiders note that “Colony” intentionally deviates from standard zombie tropes by introducing an entirely new species with distinct physical traits, delivering an intelligent, highly fresh narrative perspective on the outbreak genre.
The incredible commercial velocity of “Colony” was initially signaled on its premiere day, when it comfortably secured the number-one spot at the box office by drawing 199,759 viewers on opening day alone.
This massive debut comfortably dethroned previous record-holders, drawing 48,000 more viewers on day one than the major Hollywood sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2” (which opened with 150,767 viewers).
Also, it eclipsed the premiere scores of both “The King’s Warden” (117,783) and the record-breaking domestic folk-horror hit “Salmokji: Whispering Water” (89,911), signaling an absolute dominance that continued into its first full weekend frame, where it amassed 1,280,165 viewers from May 22 to May 24.
