The 2016 split between Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif remains one of the most dissected chapters in Bollywood history.
After nearly seven years together and a move into a shared apartment, the relationship dissolved just as they were completing their final film together, Jagga Jasoos.
While the couple never released a joint “checklist” of reasons, their subsequent interviews and investigative reports from the time point to three major structural issues.
Family Approval and the “Mother Factor”
One of the most persistent narratives surrounding the breakup was the lack of approval from Ranbir’s parents, Neetu and Rishi Kapoor.
Katrina herself hinted at this dynamic in an explosive 2015 interview with GQ, where she admitted,
“I am not as close to Ranbir’s family as I would like. But I would like to hang out with them more. Family would be a defining factor when I make the decision to marry.”
The tension became public when Neetu Kapoor famously cropped Katrina out of a family photo on Instagram, and later skipped the Kapoor family’s annual Christmas brunch when Katrina attended as Ranbir’s guest.

Reports suggested that the Kapoors were particularly unhappy when Ranbir moved out of the family home, Krishna Raj, to live with Katrina—a move that was seen as a significant break from tradition for the “mama’s boy” actor.
Commitment Insecurity and The “Deepika” Factor
A second major strain was a fundamental difference in how both parties viewed their future. Katrina spoke openly about her “anticipation of heartbreak,” stating, “My greatest fear is that if and when I get married and I am standing at the altar… he may not know his mind well enough to be making those commitments.” While she was reportedly ready for marriage, Ranbir was often described as having “cold feet” whenever the topic was broached.
This insecurity was further exacerbated by Ranbir’s professional proximity to his ex-girlfriend, Deepika Padukone. During the promotions for their film Tamasha (2015), the visible camaraderie and “clinging” between Ranbir and Deepika reportedly became a final straw for Katrina. She noted in interviews that while she couldn’t enforce her will on others’ choices, she wasn’t necessarily happy with them.
The Aftermath: “Breaking to Rebuild”
The breakup was notoriously difficult, especially as the two had to continue working together on the sets of Jagga Jasoos. Ranbir later described Katrina as the “most influential and motivational entity” in his life after his parents, while Katrina took a more introspective approach to the healing process.
Reflecting on the split years later, Katrina shared: “I had to break before I could proceed to rebuild myself. I had to unravel and feel everything that had happened… what I could and should have done better.” She credited her mother for helping her realize she wasn’t alone in her grief, which eventually allowed her to maintain a cordial professional relationship with Ranbir in the years that followed.
By 2026, both have found stability elsewhere—Ranbir with his wife Alia Bhatt and their daughter Raha, and Katrina with her husband Vicky Kaushal—transforming their past friction into a lesson on “civility after heartbreak.”
