The Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 18, led by Judge Lee Jun-gu, presided over the trial on May 27th for YouTuber Park, who is accused of defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

Park, concealing her identity with a wig, glasses, and mask, responded to the court’s inquiry about her occupation by stating she runs an online shopping mall. The charges stem from videos posted in June 2022 about Kang Daniel on the “Sojang” channel, with provocative titles aimed at slandering him.

The prosecution argued Park intended to defame. However, Park’s lawyer contended there was no malicious intent, claiming Park believed the information to be true. When questioned about the accuracy of the information, the lawyer emphasized the prosecution’s responsibility to prove falsehood.

YouTuber Park faces defamation charges for leaking misinformation on K-pop idols.

As Park exited the court, Dispatch reporters questioned her about her multiple name changes, continued video postings despite legal warnings, and her use of YouTube earnings to buy property. Park remained silent, hiding her face, while her lawyer assured her that these matters would be addressed in the next hearing.

Park is also entangled in a civil lawsuit with IVE’s Jang Wonyoung and Starship Entertainment, who won the initial trial. The failed mediation attempt in the second trial has led to ongoing legal battles.

Additionally, Park faces criminal charges, with the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office indicting her without detention for defamation and insult under the Information and Communications Network Act. Between October 2021 and June last year, Park allegedly posted 23 defamatory videos targeting celebrities on her “Sojang” YouTube channel, reportedly earning over 250 million won from these activities.
